The IRS has announced automatic tax relief for individuals and businesses in FEMA-declared disaster areas—including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina—extending federal tax filing and payment deadlines to May 1, 2025.

What This Means for You

If your address of record is in one of the affected areas, you do not need to take any action to receive this extension. The IRS will automatically apply the relief.

This extension covers:

  • 2023 individual and business tax returns filing originally due between September 22, 2024, and May 1, 2025
  • First and second quarter estimated tax payments normally due January 15 and April 15, 2025
  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due October 31, 2024; January 31, 2025; and April 30, 2025
  • Tax-exempt organization returns due within the relief period
  • 2024 individual and business tax returns filing originally due between March 15 and April 15, 2025

Special Notes

  • If you need more time to file beyond May 1, you may still request an extension until October 15, 2025.
  • This extension does not apply to payments due before the disaster period (e.g., prior balances or 2023 tax payments).
  • If you’ve already filed and scheduled a payment for before May 1, you can reschedule or cancel through your IRS online account or payment processor.
